"...Everybody has quite a bit to work on. Like when I'm playing, there are certain things I try to get done...The best thing a critic can do, is to thoroughly understand what he is writing about and then jump in. That's al he can do. I have seen favorable criticism which revealed a lack of profound analysis, causing it to be little more than superficial. Understanding is what is needed. That is all you can do.
Get all the understanding for what you are speaking of that you can get. That way you have done your best. It's the same with a musician who is trying to understand music as well as he can. Undoubtedly, none of us are going to be 100% - in either criticism or music. No percent near that, but we've got to try. Understanding is the whole thing. in talking to a critic, try to understand him, and he can try to understand the part of the game that you are in. With this understanding, there's no telling what could be accomplished. Everybody would benefit."
-John Coltrane, Down Beat Magazine, 1962
Some day we might start to begin to understand how powerful hip-hop is. This won't happen until we all get an understanding of what it is, where it came from, where it is today, and where it's going to be. Once we all start to get together, know our scene, know our critics, know our partners, know each other, then we can really move towards the cause for the Tacoma scene. Let's make it happen boys and girl.
At this all scene meetings, make them more powerful than just trading records, or chopping it up over a beer. Know why you are there, know what you can bring to the table, and know that YOU don't have it all together!
"Two are more powerful than one..." -Ecclesiates 4:9
There is strength in numbers, but only if those numbers know why they are together.
I need to make a correction....Once we all start to get together, know our scene, know our critics, know our partners, know each other, then we can really move towards the cause for the 253 scene...."
www.myspace.com/hulensYeah I wonder as it turns fall if more people will start coming to shows since the weather is going to be crappy
Hiphop has a inner circle.i wouldnt think weather would be a factor on coming to a show or not
www.myspace.com/toddsykesmusicas long as its a reasonable price the only factor is whose on the bill
schmaltzy is wreckinnot true there were a few nights this summer where i was gonna go out to seattle for shows but it was just too nice to waste a day off so i had to be out on the water. most of the time it's determined by the bill, though, ass much as it pains me to agree with small t or iron sykes
cute names.
were you at dawsons creek on those days off?
smell what im steppin inyou can't buy most of the higher end laughs that we carry in stock, but i'll be able to let you know in the next few days whether we can special order something more in your price range. were you looking for some post-o.c. jack black or something more along the lines of spongebob squarepants?
thanks for the inspirational quote to start us off mr. chicken soup for the hip hop soul
in montana i'm going to throw concerts in conjunction with keggers, and i'm not going to throw anybody on a makeshift stage who i don't think is REALLY entertaining. tacoma artists, especially you plu folks, should perform at people's parties as affordably as possible. there are too many people with financial interests at clubs and venues and not a big enough pot. plus most of you aren't good enough, yet, and could use some time and field seasoning to develop. i'm no don king/dame dash/cam'ron movement orchestrator extraordinaire, but i'd say those are some basic ingredients to sweetening your smorgasboard.
Dawson - When you reach the level of John Coltrane start talkin....Dame Dash ain't on that level, and certainly Cam'ron aint....go back to the creek and bury yourself under some rocks.

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!
www.myspace.com/deejayreigndawson:especially you plu folks
did you like apply and not get in or something homie? this is the second time in like 2 weeks you've got at 10th & Commerce (the first being your plu references on the Tacoma Proof Thread), cause anybody on here as much as you knows we are the only local group that goes to school or plans shows there, unless your talking about Grynch (plu class of 08), but considering his place in Northwest Hip-Hip im sure your not. the show that i put on with my band, Can-U, Macklemore, and One.Be.Lo was one of the illest tacoma events of last spring, and the shit was free, and im pretty sure your ass was there. next time i throw some shit like that, you don't need to fucking come.
www.myspace.com/rockwellpowersi think the cave, which has been host to a few good shows, is a valuable piece in the 253 hip hop field. honestly, there has been maybe 6-10 shows in tacoma that have been real dope. 2-3 at plu.
and looks like most all of that is credit, to understatement, so props, your really helping out the scene.
and macklemore and one be lo have been two of the biggest names to come to tacoma in the past few months.
word homie, i dont think the cave is any incredible venue. the sound is pretty crappy and i cant stand the blank white walls, but i its better than nothing and i have easy access to it soi feel obligated to try and make shit happen once a month, especially when i can talk plu into picking up the bill like they did for the one.be.lo show. im not the only person who gets this, can-u and reign came out and did two shows before i could get plu to cut them a check... so i dont wanna come off as i think the cave is incredible, but i think its fucked up for people to try to clown college shows just cause there college shows.
www.myspace.com/rockwellpowersits one person, dont get all hurt about it. the cave is dope for a lot of reasons. There's been more then 10 dope shows in tacoma too. i'll tell you that much right now. maybe 10 dope ones that were posted on this website since its inception but i've managed to hear great music year round. fuck, even if the shows in my living room the shits still the truth, haha.
reread my post 3 times and don't see how anybody but jason could be insulted by it. i wasn't taking shots and lol i thought like 80% of you went to school at plu. i would never apply to a private college unless i thought they would pay for all of it, and certainly wouldn't pay that kind of money for the right to go to school in south tacoma. if it's a good fit for you, cool, i never meant to insult it and did not. that one be lo show was incredible, even though the first performer was forgettable.
i also never would've laughed so hard at jason's post and clowned him if i knew he was john coltrane.
it truly is an honor
Yo Dawson, I think Joey is at your window.
www.myspace.com/hulenswhodat?
i don't get it. is that from dawson's creek? i think i'm a little too young to get it.
you're not really john coltrane, are you, you sly dog?
It's kind of funny when a young kid who goes to school over in Montana is a know it all about the 253 scene. like i said in the quote, try to get an understanding young buck, then may be you can grow up and start building. that goes for all you young punks (age and maturity wise).
www.myspace.com/hulensi hear tacoma is a vibrant community, and would like very much to visit someday!
