gettin out of the house and heading up to 6th ave to do some diggin. Thought it might be dope to throw up a thread on some of the local shops that might send some business their way. So DJ's.. where's the vinyl? I'm not askin for your secret secret spots, but who's got the good dollar bins? Who stocks recent indy singles? Where's the collector-priced white label promo test-presses? Where's the Mom and Pop spots that will move your cd's on commission/consignment?

  1.

ON 6th AVE there's a few Record stores, mostly Museum Like in their Awesomeness
Good luck finding any Hip hop though.....for that you need to hit up Easy Street records in Seattle
if you're looking for hip hop 12 inch i'm down to trade

    Check out these grooves

definitely down for some 12" trades, if you have a list hit me with it at djslimrock@gmail.com or just let me know what sort of stuff you're looking for. I'm STILL sorting out stuff I'm willing to part with/have triple copies of etc..., so it would help narrow it down if I knew what might peak your interest.
Good looks on the Easy Street tip, I haven't hit Seattle much besides an occasional browse through platinum since Respect closed. Zion's Gate any good? I haven't been through. Golden Oldies still has a few spots scattered around, but it takes a full day to hit just one of them, sorta the same deal with cellophane square.

  2.

house of records is dope, if you're really into diggin' you can find some joints up in there. i always get my 20 dollars in free records every time i hit that place up if you know what im sayin. the rest of the places on 6th are over priced though. i hate that place across the street from house of records, and that greaser bass player that runs that place too.

  3.

You must be talking about hi-voltage records.....whats with that dudes greasy jerri curl?
they do have a dope selection of jazz though...

The funny thing about High Voltage, it wasn't high priced when he first moved in. It actually was pretty reasonable...then he started to see the types of records people were buying and the prices started to shoot up...

The best record spot I ever found was at a garage sale...This lady had a husband who died 20 years before and he was an old radio dj from detroit....RECORDS FOR DAYS. That was my biggest find in the 253.....

You guys should hit up Zac Hendrix on myspace. He has a real nice home record shop...You want it, he's probably got it...

the last record i bought came from high voltage it was only 5 bucks. some shit is kinda high but there is shit thats not to bad.

Honestly I've never had a problem with that dude at Hi Voltage. I went in there the first week he opened and he was always hella cool to me. I dont see him much these days because I stay in Seattle but when i go back he remembers me. He has some dope records, Price aint a thing if the record is clean (to a point). Peep Jive Time in Seattle, some real collectors in that spot.

  5.

those are all good spots and another good spot is half-priced books over by the mall. they dont have a huge selection but you can definitely find some steals. i would also recommend Big Al's over by the tacoma guitar center, its in the chevys plaza

If you head to Al's you really need to spend time in the records below the main one's put out...I spent 2 hours one time and came out with some real fresh records for $0.25 each!

ya Al's is definately a great spot to find some bargains, i found the nas "got yourself a gun" and "stillmatic" their and one was like $3.50 and the other was $2. it was a great find. but i was at half price yesterday and they have a decent selection of old soul records for cheap.

tacoma is few and far between...

hi voltage has everything but the guy doesnt know shit about pricing or what people listen to.

house of records and golden oldies are both great but dont have a very quick flow of new material.

rocket records has sunk. that guy doesnt have a fucking clue. overpriced. overwhelmed. i am tired of him playing the south park soundtrack everytime i come in because he thinks i am into that? its happened twenty times.

drastic plastic. decent records but the fucking gargoyle that runs this place is a real piece. he slapped my hand once for looking at a record out of its sleeve that had been under the counter. i almost decked him. when he told me that he had to display it i told him to get fucked and walked out. this guy will put a price tag on anything he can find... including weird toys and magic cards. and pogs.... who the fuck buys pogs. he does have a wild beanie baby collection though. oof.

buzzards in downtown... starting to pick up speed in the vinyl room. i have some friends that work there so i can phone calls when they bring in big halls.

    olympia....

phantom city is small but has great stock indie soul hip hop punk whatever. really well priced.

rainy day is more of an indie hipster store but they have vinyl

    seattle...

singles going steady - best punk / hardcore store in the state. they have a massive hip hop / dub reggae section as well

zions gate on capitol hill - mostly metal / stoner rock and reggae

easy street - west seattle or the bottom of queen anne hill - they have every new indie release and a great well priced used lp / 7" selection. always a treat.

People who give you props: 253hiphop, DJSlimrock

    toddsykes253:

where is the disc connection at?

is that the freaky place across from the bingo hall thats run by russians? its the most ridiculous place i have been....they have millions of cd cases in shelves. than you go up and the guy has to find the cds... so i go in and find like 20 cds and he is like "you really want these? come back tomorrow and ill have them out for you?" in a thick russian accent.

i forgot all about als. that place is great. my old band made tape demos by buying 10 for $1 tapes of random bands. cheap and easy.

also out in parkland on garfield on plu campus there is a pretty cool record store...or is that disc connection?

what the hell is the place i was talking about than. i know it was next to a tattoo shop on pac ave

Zac isn't just a dude bro....first give some respect. There's a reason this man hides out in Federal Way. I'll tell you this, he knows of almost every records store across the nation. I was in Colorado (way in the mountains) and called him, and he told me the spots to go to...This is the Rockies fellas, ain't much out there but bears, mountain goats and snow.

Zac Hendrix is Del the Funky Homosapien's tour DJ. Next to Johnnybeats, he is one of the most knowledgable people I know about records and music. AS far as his collection, this guy knows his stuff. He is in no way limited to hip-hop. He has it all...from funk, hiphop, soul, jazz, fusion, country, soundtracks, scores, rock, gospel....HE IS NOT LIMITED!!!

I would bet that if he doesn't have what you are looking for, he knows where you can get it. The dude runs his own store out of his house, which if you ever went to you would see his collection your eyes would be wide open....The only person I know of that has as many records as he did in his house is Supreme, but Supreme is the ultimate collector.

If you want to call him, hit me on the email and I can give you his email address, he's also on my myspace page.

    His email address is:

Yeah, I've been over to the spot on Garfield plenty of times. It is actually pretty close to where I stay.

Zac Hendrix is no joke when it comes to records. The first time I went over to his house I couldn't even believe what I was seeing. He has the biggest collection that I have seen in person. I did miss the chance to go into Supreme's house with Jason and Johnny Beats, and that would have been the biggest collection, but Zac's collection is amazing. I need to go over there soon.

rocket records fell the fuck off, they used to have a semi-ok hip hop section and a super good punk rock section but now everythings pretty much the same as house or any of the other "museum-eskque" shops around. hi voltage seems to be the place with the best selection but i agree they're a little steep on somethings, but their dollar and three dollar bin out front make up for it, meatloaf bat out of hell for a buck are you kidding me!?!?!

-also, i've lived less than a mile from disc connection for a while now and have only been twice. something just didn't feel comfortable about that place, reminded me of al's in it's awkward uneasy set up and stuff. otherwise i think it was pretty cool.

Funny thing is, one time Zac and I went to a Auto shop right by Disc Connection on Garfield to buy a record collection off some dudes, it was one of the grimiest places....dug through thousands of throw aways, but came out with about 75 1987-1994 hiphop 12", promo's and albums that kill it...PEte Rock CL Smooth TROY remixes, promos...it was nuts....disc connection guy hits the streets of tacoma hard core on the weekends of the summers going to garage sales. i went to one near my house, i felt like they had some records so i stopped...i asked if they did and they mentioned this old tall white guy with sun glasses came and asked already and they threw them out a couple of days before. I knew exactly who they were talking about!

I asked what records they tossed, Donald Byrd, Isaac Hayes, James Brown....I about flipped on them...I said, "Just to let you know, my heart just broke right now. You through away some history right there that kills me..."

I walked back to my car and my son (Isaac) asks "Daddy, didn't they have records?!" future digger right there!

You don't know the half of it!

Today was a dope day in Tacoma. Me and Reign got some dope records:
Crown Heights Affair - Self Titled
    Johnny Hammond - Gamblers Life
    Mandrill - Mandrilland
    Mandrill - Solid
Idris Muhammad - Power of Soul
    Billy Cobham - Crosswinds

    and more!

I won't tell you where or how...Just know what comes around goes around in this city!

I am never going to Buzzards again! To let you all know, they price their records by going online and comparing the records to AMAZON. It was crazy...I couldn't believe it...Now looking at all the prices on their records it really shows. There's no common sense there.

Disc Connection actually used to have some dope records....I used to go there with Johnnybeats in 1999 and 2000 and found some decent records. Just had to talk him down a bit in his pricing.
