So I'm imagining a hot summer day, a few bbqs, some live music, breakdancing etc, you think we could make this work as a community? This is one of the most under utilized places in downtown Tacoma. There is powerhookup, if this is something of interest it could be really fun.

Anyone think we could draw a large enough crowd to make it fun?

    hmmmmm

thats right across from the convention center right? i wonder who owns it or if it's city property. i kinda doubt anyone downtown would be much help unless someone knew someone who knows someone.

City, from what ive read the whole point of the design was to have people just show up and do stuff there, of course we would have to ok it with the city but wouldn't be be something if we took lead to utilize the space...

Think blowup screen with dj/mc being projected on there while a huge crowd out front, wouldn't that be a fun summer night?

    absolutely. a great idea.

i'll see if i can't figure out who to talk to about this. required permits and what-not.

could be a problem announcing it as a hip-hop night what with the recent cancellations @ Broadway and the Evergreen fiasco.

but my mother works closely with the city and therefore i know some peeps down there. i'll definitely inquire.

in any case, just wanna say i think this is a dope idea.

i'll tell you where you will start having problems is if you run with the bbq idea too much. if it is a public event and you are offering food, all the sudden the Health Dept. is on your ass and they are no fun. you need catering permits and the works.

so i guess what i'm sayin is try to avoid the food aspect for now.
    just an extra hoop.

Yeah guess my thing was, what if it was just there for people to use, sort of like how they have grill at public parks. Sort of like community grills where you cook your own/bring something to grill

Aaaah I thought you were gonna cook our food, wipe our chins, and hold our hands for us duude!!

I think we could have the bbq elsewhere and regroup later at Tollefson or Alternate, sounds dope to me!

They're thinking of booking some Hip-Hop there for Tall Ships. I'm talking to a lady about it right now. Nothing in concrete yet, but if I can get down I'll open the door for more sets and I'll try my best to let as many peeps rock as they will allow.

Yea they have had hiphop there before for "Showcase Tacoma" its just so under utilized that if we got the oks it would be cool to just go there setup some bbqs, some tables, a PA and just have a good time :)

who has a PA system...it's gotta be loud. big, bad, and nasty.

I won't be in charge of the hip hop genre at that point, but maybe we can get KUPS involved...put a banner up and the like...it's not exactly our territory...I don't even think 90.1 picks up downtown...but it'd be dope if the hip hop club could be a part of it.

i have a buddy who works @ American Bandstand and could probably hook us up with the best PA free money can buy. Of course banners and the sort will be in order, but it's a very real possibility if we could get the clearance from the city.

It actually doesn't take much to put something on there. City approval, permit and event! I'd say a bboy jam with some performances would be a good first start with the City. The people I know in the City love what we used to do...we had some good support. It's all about who you know and how you do things with Tacoma. It's a perfect time of year to put something on too...I'd say shoot for end of August or early September, drive traffic from three arenas (UWT, SOTA, and other art and business orgs from downtown). If you approach it like that it could be really successful and a good jump to future hiphop events for the downtown scene.

Also, if you haven't heard, the performance square off of broadway (by the transit station) will also soon be a good outdoor venue. The City transit station has been proposed to be moved to the Elks lodge so the City/Metro Parks will most likely take that over...another dope spot!

I remember the video of Ajax getting hemmed up over by there for Skating! Fice, you know what I'm talkin about!
