everytime a buddy comes through to shoot photos of our shows they end up taking those streaky-light tripped out fuckin pics that drive me nuts. i want just a clear photo of the band in action...
how do i tell whoever is taking pictures that i don't like that streaky-light shit?
anybody know what i'm talkin about here?

Yeah, well put me on some guestlists so I can practice and you might start seeing some decent concert photos from me, I've been reading a lot and just invested in a better lens which is faster and can open up really wide so I don't have to use the flash. Just need to learn more about settings and such

I'm hoping it arrives for the show this friday so I can start practicing

Well, you can lower the time needed for the shutter to stay open by using a larger aperature, By opening the arperture more and alowing more light in, u reduce the amonut of time needed to take a well exposed picture with out having shake or blur as a factor. Also try a subtle preflash, something to put some light other there to reflect back, but not like an actual flash that just completly reflects. try to get the camera set up so that light from lights is used but the highlight (or bulb) of the light is not in the shot to prevent burning the image out in that spot of the spectrum. hope that helps!

best practical advice i can give is invest money in good lenses with low f-stop. stick with minimal zoom lenses or primary lenses. as for flash just be very careful because it can/will really really flat out your image, mess around with the angle of the flash and look at the lightings in the room then decide to whether you want to use flash or not.

its gonna be extremely hard to get a decent pic at a concert with out a flash unless ur plannin on droppin mad dough on a filthy lense...ur best bet here is exactly like what 123 said...try a bounce flash instead of a direct flash...a good flash is still expensive...but its less then a lense...and you want a diffuser for it too so that the light scatters....theres nothing wrong with using a flash....just a lot of times a flash is used improperly which gives poor results..
