I don't know if you guys heard, but VIBE Magazine is shutting down.

    http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/06/30/vibe-magazine-shutting-down/

This is actually pretty big news to me. VIBE used to be a place where I could get some real deal news in magazine format. The days when Source was an amalgamation of Almighty RSO junkies, Vibe offered the fresh alternative. In the early to mid 90s they had fresh photography, real good articles...by 1997 they went down the path of the typical magazine and lost touch with their freshness...but to have them shut down is big news right now.

A piece of history is shutting down.

  1.

yea i agree jason, it used to be a really fresh hip-hop mag with great photography and real journalists. my roommate had a subscrition last year tho, and i was sad to see that it had become a mainstream rap tabloid with usually one decent feature and never about an artist that can't be heard 30 times a day on any clear channel pop station. i was sad to see it decay, and am not surprised its going under. i don't think most people who listen to chris brown and soulja boy are purchasing periodicals.

in similiar news im depressed that URB is only printing as a quarterly and r.i.p Scratch Magazine

hip hop magazines suck right now. xxl's chasing the internet (did you see their "freshman 10" or whatever? horrible!) and most of the other big-distro nationals are just lame.

i have yet to check out murder dog at all or give foundation magazine a fair shot. are they worth it?

"i don't think most people who listen to chris brown and soulja boy are purchasing periodicals" is a pretty good point. those magazines that feature a lot of top 40 stuff are chasing an audience that probably isn't nerded out enough to want to read about the people behind the music or reviews of music that they don't ahve to pay to hear themselves. as somebody who IS nerded out enough to want to read about it i'm sorry to see magazines dying.
